If you love taking everyday items and turning them into something uniquely beautiful, you’re in the right place. Today, I’m sharing three inspiring upcycling projects featuring enamelware, galvanized metal, and other thrifted treasures. With a little creativity, some paint, and gorgeous transfers, you can breathe new life into forgotten items and make them your own.

Let’s dive into these fun, trash-to-treasure transformations that are perfect for DIY enthusiasts, crafters, and thrift flip lovers alike!

Watch the Tutorial Below!

Project 1: Metal Tray Makeover

Our first project begins with a simple metal tray I picked up at a garage sale for just a few dollars. Using Dixie Belle’s black chalk paint in the color Caviar, I painted the bottom of the tray, creating a smooth base for the transfer.

Why Chalk Paint? Chalk paint works beautifully with transfers because of its texture and versatility. For this tray, I added two coats of paint, allowing each coat to dry thoroughly. Then, I sealed it with Dixie Belle’s Satin Finish to prepare the surface for the transfer and to ensure the paint stays intact on this slightly shiny metal tray.

Adding the Transfer: I chose the IOD Rose Botanical transfer, cut out the design I loved, and carefully positioned it on the tray. The key to applying transfers is precision—once the backing is removed and the transfer is in place, it’s there to stay! Using a transfer tool, I rubbed over the design to adhere it to the tray, peeled the backing away, and sealed everything with Dixie Belle’s Gator Hide for added durability.

This finished tray is not only functional but also a stunning piece of home decor!

Project 2: Galvanized Tray Glow-Up

For our second project, I worked with a galvanized tray that needed a little personality. Once again, I used Dixie Belle’s Caviar chalk paint, applying two coats to the inside bottom of the tray and allowing it to dry thoroughly between layers. To ensure the paint and transfer would adhere well to the shiny surface, I added a coat of Dixie Belle’s Satin Finish before moving to the next step.

Customizing with Transfers: I selected several pieces from the Rose Botanical transfer set and layered them for a beautiful, cohesive look. Transfers are incredibly versatile, allowing you to adjust and layer designs until you’re happy with the result. Once the transfers were applied, I sealed the tray with Dixie Belle’s Gator Hide to protect the design from scratches or wear and tear. This durable finish makes the tray perfect for holding trinkets, keys, or even small plants.

Project 3: Enamelware Revival

For the final project, I repurposed a vintage enamelware sap bucket once used for collecting maple syrup. Enamelware provides an excellent surface for transfers, but precision is key since transfers stick firmly to the glossy finish.

Using more beautiful designs from the Rose Botanical transfer set, I adorned the bucket with floral motifs and added a scripted phrase to tie everything together. This upcycled piece would look gorgeous hanging on a wall with greenery or flowers spilling over the edge. The script detail added just the right amount of charm to make this bucket a statement piece.

Why Upcycling Is So Rewarding

Transforming thrifted or forgotten items into stunning home decor is not only budget-friendly but also incredibly satisfying. These projects show how easy it is to turn simple items into treasures that reflect your personal style. Whether you’re a seasoned crafter or just starting out, the right materials—like Dixie Belle paint and IOD transfers—make all the difference.

How to Style These Upcycled Pieces

These projects look beautiful together in a vignette or displayed individually. For example, you could hang the trays on a wall in a cascading arrangement or use them as functional decor on a flat surface. The enamelware bucket works wonderfully as a rustic wall accent, especially when paired with greenery.
