All it takes is some super affordable white ceramic tiles and scrapbook paper of your choice to create an eye-catching set.
To give these cuties an extra touch of pizzazz before gifting them away, stack four of them together, then finish off by tying jute twine or ribbon around them – no need for wrapping paper here!
Follow the step-by-step instructions below to get started on this easy, frugal project anyone can do.
Supplies:
• Scrapbook paper to decoupage
• Four 4-1/4 x 4-1/4 white ceramic tiles (Amazon, Menards, Home Depot, Habitat for Humanity ReStore)
• Mod Podge
• Brush
• Self-Adhesive 4 x 4 cork sheets for backing
• Acrylic (I like to use either Rust-Oleum Specialty Matte Finish Spray or Minwax Water Based Helmsman Spar Urethane Clear Satin.)
Instructions:
1. Wipe the top of the tiles with a damp paper towel or rubbing alcohol to remove dust and dirt.
2. Cut the scrapbook paper to fit the top of the tile. I cut my paper to measure 4-1/8 x 4-1/8 so it’s just a little smaller than the tile.
3. Brush a layer of Mod Podge on the tile. Immediately lay your scrapbook paper down in the Mod Podge. You have a few seconds to move the paper around for adjustments. Make sure to smooth out any air bubbles underneath the paper with your brush.
4. Gently spread a coat of Mod Podge over the whole top of the tile, including the paper. The Mod Podge will dry clear.
5. Let the tile sit for 15 or 20 minutes to dry.
6. Add 2 or 3 more coats of Mod Podge, drying in between coats.
7. After the tiles are completely dry, (I usually leave them overnight), apply a light coat of acrylic on them to seal and waterproof.
8. Peel off the backing of the self-adhesive 4 x 4 cork sheets and attach them to the back of each tile, pressing firmly for complete adhesion.
Voila – personalized coasters!
